Building the capacity of mathematics and science teachers to teach statistics

Organizer

Abstract

The preparation of teachers is a necessary step toward sustaining strength and building capacity in statistics education. Research suggests that teachers are often under prepared to teach statistical content in schools. This session will include presentations by researchers who report on results from studies aimed at preparing teachers to teach statistics. This session will highlight essential understandings teachers need to develop in order to teach students effectively. Sessions will highlight how the statistical preparation of teachers differs from the mathematical preparation of teachers and shed light on the importance of context in the statistical problem solving process.
