Personal well-being

Flagstaff is located in northern Arizona at an elevation of 7000ft (2100 m). Due to the combination of low humidity and high elevation, it is highly recommended that you drink plenty of water during your visit to the area. Furthermore, it is advisable to wear sunscreen and other sun protection (such as a hat) while spending time outside. Flagstaff can also experience heavy rain in July, so it’s wise to have access to rain gear.

National Parks

There are many opportunities to explore the scenic southwestern United States either before or after the conference. Four popular National Parks in the area are:
Also nearby is Petrified Forest National Park (113 miles, 180 km).

If you plan to visit a National Park and would like to stay overnight at a lodge in the park, we recommend that you make a reservation as soon as possible, because availability is very limited. Make plans early if you intend to stay overnight in a nearby National Park — do not wait until after you have registered for the conference to make lodging reservations! In addition, guided tours within a park may fill up early, so make reservations as far in advance as you can.

For more information, visit the website for the national park of interest and choose the “Plan Your Visit” tab to find information about lodging options within the park. For most parks, other lodging options are also available nearby, and typically do not fill up as quickly. For example, lodging near Grand Canyon is available in Tusayan, one mile south of the park main entrance.

National Monuments

A variety of interesting National Monuments (NMs) are also within driving distance of Flagstaff:

Other attractions

  • The Museum of Northern Arizona (3.4 miles, 5.5 km) showcases the anthropological, biological, and geological history of northern Arizona, as well as featuring fine art of the Native tribes (Hopi, Navajo, Zuni and others) of the region.
  • Lowell Observatory (1.3 miles, 2 km) on Mars Hill just west of downtown Flagstaff is a research observatory and associated museum where visitors can learn about the discovery of Pluto made there, and peer through the telescope that Percival Lowell used to identify canals on Mars.
At the privately owned Meteor Crater (46 miles, 74 km), visitors can view the world’s best preserved meteoric impact site, a crater over 550 feet deep and over one mile in diameter.

Just south of Flagstaff, visitors can drive highway US-89A through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona, Arizona (29 miles, 47 km) to enjoy spectacular views of the red rock (sandstone) formations rivaling in beauty many national parks. Opportunities to hike and shop in Sedona attract tourists from all over the world.
