about: Flagstaff, ICOTS, IASE, conference theme

The ICOTS9 logo is based on the winning entry in a local design competition. The winner was Mina Hajibandeh, a statistics student at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Flagstaff was named the first international dark city in 2001 by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). Shooting stars are frequently seen in the clear night skies. The logo depicts stars displayed as a scatterplot on a 2 dimensional Cartesian plane while the best-fit polynomial regression is represented by a shooting star. The colors are simple but resemble the classic white on a field of blue, which is signature to our nations flag. Thus, this logo incorporates not only local but also national themes with statistics. Of the recent conferences, regression has not been present in any of the logos — the designer thinks that this fresh new look is “fitting” for the new conference.
