Abstract

Increasingly, tertiary education providers are working to ensure flexible options are available for courses. In a move to do this, our large (400+ students) first year, first semester introductory maths and biostatistics course was overhauled from an entirely in-person course to an online (and later, mixed/flipped) mode of delivery. Here we outline some of the tools and methods used to successfully enact this change, and the impacts observed on student outcomes. Specifically, the use of pre-recorded lecture videos, online tutorials and self-directed SPSS (statistical software) modules will be discussed. Students showed an affinity and appreciation for the flexibility and novel resources offered in this learning environment, affirming that the move to online learning & teaching of statistics is achievable and welcomed by students.
