Workshop D (Saturday 7th, 14:30-18:30; Room: 2-AVS)
Statistics Refresher Boot Camp Workshop: Development of an Active Learning Environment
Presenter
- Brian Leventhal (United States)
Description
The purpose of this workshop is to guide higher education introductory and intermediate statistics teachers (undergraduate and graduate level) through the development of a short intensive statistics refresher course (aka “boot camp”). We found that a statistics refresher boot camp increases statistics self-efficacy and skills, aiding transition into further statistics courses. In this workshop, facilitators will walk participants through a backwards design process (Fink 2004; Wiggins, 1998) to create their own boot camp tightly aligned with their own student learning objectives (SLOs). Participants will learn how to develop measurable SLOs, create and align activities to SLOs, incorporate innovative evidenced-based teaching practices, and use meta-cognition and immediate formative feedback to facilitate learning. Participants will leave the workshop with a series of skills and resources to conduct their own boot camp.
