Teaching Statistics with real-world census and health survey data from IPUMS

Presenters

Description

IPUMS (ipums.org [1]) partners with national statistical offices and other organizations worldwide to provide integrated and harmonized microdata and metadata free of charge to researchers and educators. A leading developer and disseminator of demographic data, IPUMS also serves a broad audience of more than 80,000 demographic and health researchers worldwide. Building on output provided at ICOTS 9 and the IASE Roundtable on teaching with real-world data, IPUMS has developed instructional modules designed to teach statistical concepts using the available data. Participants will be asked to bring their own laptops to this hands-on workshop. The workshop will include an introduction to the data and web access system, sample exercises from the teaching modules, and guided discussion of the rewards and challenges of teaching with real-world data. The workshop is primarily for teachers of introductory to intermediate-level statistics content, and for those who would like to integrate real-world data in teaching.

Bring your own laptop.
