Capacity Building of Statistics Teachers through Mentoring and other Innovative Ways

Abstract
The implementation of K to 12 has changed a disciplinal mathematics curriculum to a spiral curriculum where topics in statistics are usually placed at the last quarter of the academic year. Many teachers do not finish all learning competencies required for statistics. It has been reported that there is an increase in the number of students and there is an increasing need for teachers who can teach statistics. This paper discusses capacity building ways in statistics education like mentoring high school teachers by tertiary level statistics teachers, training teachers, and writing books, modules and teaching guides. Innovative ways to improve teaching statistics for large and fast-paced classes include the use of statistical software, blended learning and inquiry-based learning. Evaluations of these methods will be explored.
