This study, framed in a narrative learning perspective, investigated how an innovative story-based task facilitated students’ understanding of sampling distributions. The story was situated in a real-world context about quality control in manufacturing. Students were required to write dialogue for the characters in the story to explain key concepts of the sampling distributions. The thirteen participants were enrolled in a post-secondary introductory business statistics course. Data, consisting of students’ written responses to the story-based task, were analyzed qualitatively. Results suggest that the story approach was effective in helping the participants to develop conceptual understanding of the key concepts of the sampling distribution and how these concepts were meaningful to the real-world story context.
