Abstract

At Wageningen University bachelor students follow an introductory course in statistics. Due to variation in quantitative skills, interest, and learning style, lectures might not be equally effective for all students. To remedy this, video clips and self-tests have been added as an integrated part of the course. The clips are motivating, explaining, or offering a deeper understanding. The self-tests adapt to the level of the students’ skills and knowledge. The year previous to the innovation, 550 students filled in a questionnaire about course experiences and motivation. After the introduction, 660 students filled in the same questionnaire, but with ten additional questions about the online teaching methods. We will present the effects of introducing clips and self-tests on students’ motivation, course outcomes, and lessons learned.
