Abstract
Although learning about handling data, and the introduction of statistical ideas, are now generally well established as topics within the primary curriculum, the time actually allocated for them may be small relative to other subjects. For student teachers who have to develop competence across the whole curriculum, mathematics is often seen as posing one of the greatest challenges and their confidence about teaching statistics may be particularly low. The result may be that statistics becomes a marginalized topic, squeezed into odd corners of the timetable. In this session we aim to explore ways in which learning to teach statistics can be brought “centre stage” in the experience of pre-service primary teachers, particularly through cross-curricular approaches which contextualize the uses of data in meaningful ways.Papers
