Abstract

The direct relationship between improving the quality of teaching and improving students’ learning is a common thread emerging from educational research. Recognizing teachers’ ongoing professional development and learning as a linchpin of instructional innovation and success for their students, we aim in this session to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative practices and methods for improving statistics teachers’ knowledge, skills and pedagogical practices. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Effective models for continuous professional development of statistics teachers (e.g. communities of practice, content coaching, lesson study, collaborative action research);
  • Tools and techniques for fostering teacher learning and reflection (e.g. student work samples, videos of teaching episodes, repertory grids);
  • Use of information and communication technologies in teacher professional development (e.g. web-based materials and resources, online professional development courses);
  • Instruments and methods for assessing teachers’ professional growth, and its impact on their instructional practices and on students’ learning of statistics;
  • International perspectives in teacher professional development.
