Using Gapminder tools to animate statistics

Presenter

Abstract

Gapminder foundation have made global development trends understandable by animating statistics. The main innovation have been to liberate the x-axis from time and instead display time as movement. The use of the animated bubble chart enables the simultaneous display of the change over time of several indicators; one on x, one on y, one as bubble size and one as color of the bubble and time is then displayed in big font numbers in grey and on a time line below. This animated bubble chart is very effective for displaying certain types of time series but is not relevant for others. The workshop share experience from the process of developing animation graphics for statistical time series and discuss what it takes to speed up the innovations for graphics display of statistics. After all the computer game industry are far ahead of us in animation, what can we learn from them?
