Communicating the joy of the practice-research marriage in statistics

Presenter

Abstract

Statistics takes effort and dedication to dig below the surface and discover how a symbiosis of careful applied and logical thinking can reveal relevant structure. How then can we entice statistically naive students into this effort of rigorous logical reasoning and allow them to develop a taste for the value and useful results of this statistical method that handles and quantifies randomness and uncertainty, and promises reproducibility?

In this talk we explore the potential and limitations of bringing research into the classroom at the varying levels. We discuss such varied topics as: confidentiality and relevance of the data, work load both for the student and the teacher, efficiency and depth of learning, level of difficulty, balance between enthusiasm and accuracy, building confidence and an openness to learn, sharing high quality teaching material, case studies with elaborate solutions.
