Abstract

Today African governments recognize the crucial role that statistics can play in development. An important and recent confirmation of this is the establishment of the African Center for Statistics a few years ago as an important organ of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. This can be seen as the renaissance of the statistics function at continental level. There is no question that the demand for skilled statisticians will keep growing in Africa as elsewhere in the world. In order to meet the expectations of government line ministries, private and non-government employers there are a number of challenges that we face in teaching statistics in Africa.
