Teaching survey methodology: government-university partnerships in education

Partnerships in education arise between two educational institutions or a single educational institution and a government or private agency. The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM), initiated in 1993, is two partnerships joined together to advance training, education, and research in the nascent field of survey methodology. The “Joint” in JPSM refers to a partnership among two universities and a private research firm to offer a survey methodology education program. This partnership receives primary support through another partnership of US government statistical agencies. This paper examines the history and structure of the program, the program impact on the careers of its graduates, and the contributions of JPSM graduates and faculty to the official statistics agencies that have been the primary sponsors. It also discusses JPSM collaborative relationships to other university, government, private, and statistical association partners.
