Workshop F (Sunday 8th, 09:30-13:30)

On teaching model-fitting through a newly developed estimator in the case of self-inverse distributions

Organizer

Description

The half-day workshop is intended for Statistics faculty teaching probability distributions to senior-level undergraduate statistics majors. Participants will be exposed to a newly developed estimator of the distribution mean when dealing with data from a self-inverse distribution such as the widely used lognormal distribution, and will be encouraged to motivate their students to (i) try out Monte Carlo simulation in order to realize the gains in efficiency and (ii) fit self-inverse distributions to relevant real data using both the new estimator and the sample mean in order to see for themselves that, by and large, the new estimator yields better-fitting models.
