Abstract

There are many avenues besides the official school curriculum for creating interest in statistics at the school level. This session showcases three possibilities, two of which are related to competitions supported by statistical societies and members of industry. In Russia, a topic is set for student investigation, followed by further analysis of other data, whereas in Australia, students are given free choice of a context for a project with help from industry mentors. The third avenue brings a local Australian community together by collecting data on the history of its World War 1 soldiers and providing lessons for school students.
