Strategic Engagement: Teaching for Learning in an Introductory Online Statistics Course Abstract

This paper suggests useful and practical teaching strategies as well as effective tools of technology to help engage students learning introductory statistics concepts at a distance. Considering the latest recommendations from the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report (2005; 2012; 2016), an example introductory topic is illustrated considering a competency-based approach to teaching. Newer forms of technology that utilize mobile learning are also presented and examined in the context of teaching and learning objectives. Additionally, formative assessment strategies are proposed that are specific in identifying student difficulties and may be useful in enhancing student learning.
