In August 2017, an R workshop was held in Lilongwe, Malawi at a regional biometrics conference for Sub-Saharan Africa. Its aim was to improve participants’ statistical computing skills and their ability to use and interpret data. The workshop used RStudio and R-Instat, with participants exploring real-world and a statistical game which took them through the process of design to interpretation using simulated data. This is compared with the approach used in two further workshops, one for agricultural researchers in West Africa and another for UK PhD students. A framework for adapting trainings for different audiences is presented and the three workshops are evaluated in the context of this new framework.
