In August 2017, a workshop was held in Lilongwe, Malawi at a regional biometrics conference for Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of the workshop was to improve participants statistical computing skills and ability to use and interpret data.

The workshop introduced participants to R-Instat and RStudio as software tools to work with data. It began with exploration of real-world data in varying areas of biometry. A statistical game was then used to take participants through the process of design to interpretation using simulated data. Participants also analysed their own data in the workshop with support from the facilitators.

This paper reports on the experience of the facilitators and participants on the effectiveness of the workshop in supporting participants’ statistical needs.
