The contingency of the statistical knowledge in Korean textbooks- Using a Critical Discourse Analysis

This study analyzes and compares texts in statistical areas included in elementary, middle, and high school mathematics textbooks using a critical discourse analysis. Compared to mathematical knowledge, statistical knowledge is strongly involved in the roles of context and human agency, which is a contingent aspect of statistical knowledge. This study reveals how the contingent aspects of statistical knowledge appear in the texts of textbooks and how these two aspects are described differently according to the school level. Through the analysis, it can be seen that as the level of the school increases, both roles of the context and the human agency decrease, and gradually the contingent aspects are concealed.
