Developing a Modern Data Visualisation Course

Presenter

James Baglin (Australia)

Abstract

What should a modern data visualisation course look like? This paper will attempt to answer this question by examining the recent development of a data visualisation course for postgraduate students. The paper will describe the pedagogical theory underlying the course design and the literature underpinning the syllabus and assessment chosen. The paper will discuss the practical and pedagogical considerations behind a decision to base the course on open source visualisation packages despite the widespread access to powerful commercial offerings. The paper will critically evaluate the course implementation, ongoing sticking points, suggestions for future topics and course feedback. The paper will aim to act as a valuable starting point for others commencing the development of modern data visualisation courses.
