Is data a quantitative thing? An analysis of the concept of the mode in textbooks for grade 4-6.
PresenterKarin Landtblom (Sweden)
In this paper, analyses of seven popular Swedish textbooks for grades 4-6 are presented. The textbooks are examined out of statistics, with focus of the average mode. The tasks were analysed out of quantitative or qualitative context and procedural or conceptual knowledge. Findings suggest that overall there is an excess of quantitative data in the context of the tasks. This could be a consequence of the ambiguity of the Swedish word for mode, as part of the word is synonymous with number, which indicates quantitative data. When qualitative data is used, no distinction is made between a nominal or an ordinal level. The results also show that there is a saturation of tasks attending to procedural knowledge. These findings have implications in future understanding.
